VTS Overview

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is an information exchange system that monitors the passing ships and provides data needed to ensure the safety for vessel traffic and to protect marine environment by using advanced equipment such as radar, radio direction finder (RDF), VHF, and AIS.

Key Features
  • It provides information and exercises traffic control to ensure the safety of vessels that operate in specific VTS zones.
  • It provides ships and port users withvessel traffic and port operating data.
  • It maintains orders at ports, prevents safety-compromising accidents, and responses promptly to the accidents.
  • It provides maritime weather information and supports towing and pilotage.
  • It processes data for PORT-MIS.
Applicable Vessels
  • A vessel that operates in international voyages.
  • A vessel of which gross tonnage is minimum 300 tons (however, coastwise fishing boats are excluded).
  • A dangerous cargo carrier as specified in Article 2, Paragraph 6 of Maritime Safety Act.
  • A tugboat involved in a tow that stretches to minimum 200m.
  • A fishing boat with a length of minimum 45m.
  • A passenger ship.
  • An oil tanker or a waste transport ship whose gross tonnage is 300 tons.
  • A vessel that is engaged in construction / installation or oceanographic research.
Precautions
  • A vessel navigating in VTS zones must maintain a continuous listening watch on Ch 12 or Ch 16 (VHF Ch 14 for Sokcho Port and Hosan Port).
  • Mechanical failure or maritime accidents must be reported immediately.
  • Any marine debris or marine pollution found must be reported immediately.
  • Any abnormalities found with navigation marks must be reported immediately.
  • Vessels arriving at or departing from ports must watch for fixed shore nets around their sea routes.
  • Other unusual occasions must be reported immediately.
